Crowns are a protective restoration that covers your entire tooth so that you can chew more confidently. The goal of a crown or "cap" is to prevent fracture/breakage when a tooth has a very large filling and/or cracks, fracture lines. A crown is typically made out of porcelain, zirconia (metal-oxide) or gold, and is fabricated by a U.S. laboratory. It is cemented or bonded over your tooth, which has been shaped to receive this custom restoration, so that it blends with your other teeth and fits comfortably into your bite.
