How does my dental health affect my overall health, such as heart disease and diabetes?

It has been stated that the mouth is a “window into the health of the body”.  A connection has been found between oral health and several diseases including heart disease, diabetes, alzheimer’s, pneumonia, arthritis, cancer and premature labor.  80% of American adults over 35 have some form of gum disease.

Control Your Risk

Poor dental health leads to an increase in harmful bacteria, which enters the bloodstream and can lead to an increased risk of infection and/or inflammation.  Control of gum inflammation and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease by brushing twice daily, flossing nightly and seeing your dentist & hygienist routinely for professional maintenance is key for prevention.  It is also important to reduce your health risks with proper nutrition and quitting smoking.  We would be happy to consult with your regarding your health, please contact us!
